WooHoo!! Somebody replied!! I'm not alone!
MetalMaxx, that does sound like a possibility. That would be a long drive all the way to Berlin, but I've never been out that way before so it would be worth it. How's your English? Mein deutch ist sehr slecht...ich lernen nicht von schule aber von bier trinken....so, verstehen Sie mir? That was pretty rough...I cannot write much of it at all, but I can speak a little better. I don't think that I would be able to come for a little while though. I have to get new hump-packs...mine are kaput! |

Which rally are you coming to? Or, more to the point, where in Germany will you be going to?
Tips on getting around....hmmm. Well, most places you can rent a car for around $300 a week. Study up on the German driving system and the roadsigns. The driving system over here is quite a bit different with many different rules. If you were to just jump off a plane and start driving around, you would very likely have some problems.
Check out the internet and see what the rail system has to offer. They have a pretty extensive rail system over here and you can easily get from one town to the next via train for a pretty low price. Once you get to where you want to go, bicycles are a popular mode of transportation.
Learn a few basic German phrases and words. VERY many of the Germans speak at least a little English. They all learn it in shcool, so the people in their late teens through their late 20's can usually figure out what your'e trying to say. |

I'll be going to the Rallye Deutschland August 19-22. Didn't know there was more than one rally in August. My wife is stationed in Wurzburg, but for that weekend I would like to stay someplace closer. Any suggestions there?
I'll be going to visit her in a couple weeks and like you said, I hope to get aquainted with the driving at that time. Does any place rent motorcycles? I'm thinking that may be the best way to get around to the different spectator areas during the rally. Are they really strict on the spectating like over here in the US? It's gotten to the point over here that it's not really worth going to the rallies anymore because they keep you so far from the action the cars are tiny specs.
I took German in school nearly 25 years ago and have been "refreshing" myself lately.
Thanks for any tips you can provide. |

Well, to be honest with you, I really didn't know anything about any rally... Do you know where it's being held at? Wurzburg is east of Frankfurt. Depending on what kind of rally it is and the area around it, I wouldn't be suprised if most of the people were camping around the area. There's a lot of concerts and such that are held out here (RockAmRing, to name one) where everyone camps around the area and then of course every night is one *censored* of a party!
There are places that rent out motorcycles, but I would have to guess that they would be more of the moped type of motorcycle. However, I could be dead wrong. She lives near a pretty big city compared to the farming area that I live in, so who knows what you might find to rent.
Your wife had to take a special test to get an American drivers lincese to drive here in Europe. It is called a USAEUR drivers lincense. I believe that is the correct acronym and it stands for U S Army in EURope. She was more than likely given a book to study for this test from. It's an excellent way to learn the driving system here. It comes complete with pictures of all the different road signs used here. I believe that you can rent a car/motorcycle (up to a certain size engine...the Germans allow people to ride motorcycles up to a certain size engine without any extra license requirements. It's all covered in that study guide that I'm talking about) without any special licnese, i.e. international drivers license. So, if you asked her to get this book and photocopy all of it and send it to ya (I doubt that they will give away free copies), you'd be a step ahead of the game!
Wish that I could help ya more with info about where to stay for the Rally, but I don't know anything about it. Let me know and I'll see what info I can come up with. |

Here is a link to the rally. http://www.rallye-deutschland.de/2003/index.php?rubrik=news&auswahl=start&sprache=e It's a stop on the WRC (World Rally Championship), the best of the best. It's not really held in one specific place, the stages are all around the central base of Trier. There was a PDF map on the website but it has been taken out for updates.
I just got off the phone with my wife and she is looking at buying a car, possibly an Audi. She'll have it shipped home when the time comes.
If it wasn't such a hassle to bring the Savage over, I'd definitely get togther for some runtime.
Thanks |
